D’fhógair Lá Nua agus Foras na Gaeilge a gcomhpháirtíocht le PricewaterhouseCooper, inniu, in “Gradaim Bharr-50 Gnó le Gaeilge” na bliana seo. Bronnfar na gradaim le linn mórócáide in Óstán na gCeithre Shéasúr, Baile Átha Cliath, ar 1 Meitheamh.

Seo í an dara bliain ar an saol do na Gradaim, a raibh an-rath orthu anuraidh. Tugadh aitheantas d’iarrachtaí roinnt daoine aonair agus eagraíochtaí, an Seanadóir Feargal Quinn agus Aer Arann ina measc, ar éirigh leo an Ghaeilge a dhéanamh lárnach i saol laethúil a ngnónna ard-ratha.

Ag labhairt di ar pháirt PricewaterhouseCooper sna gradaim, dúirt Ann O’Connell, Páirtnéir, Seirbhísí Comhairleacha Straitéise, PricewaterhouseCooper: “Ábhar móráthais dúinn tacaíocht agus spreagadh a thabhairt d’úsáid na Gaeilge i gcúrsaí gnó. Anois ó tá an Ghaeilge aitheanta mar theanga oifigiúil oibre de chuid an Aontais Eorpaigh, ní fearrde áit a mbeadh sí ach i gceartlár shaol an ghnó. Tá súil as againn go gcuirfidh na gradaim seo, mar aon lenár bpáirtíocht féin sa scéim, le húsáid na Gaeilge sa saol gnó amach anseo.”

Agus í ag caint ag an seoladh fosta, dúirt Príomhfheidhmeannach Lá Nua, Connla Lawlor: “Is mian linn cluinstin ó gach comhlacht ar mór leis an Ghaeilge. Imeacht na bliana seo caite, a fuair tacaíocht ón fhoras trasteorann, Foras na Gaeilge, chuir sé an Ghaeilge i lár an aonaigh agus thug le chéile grúpa suntasach ceannasaithe gnó ar léir dóibh buntáiste iomaíoch na Gaeilge san aonach gnó.”

Bronnfar Gradam Feabhais Ar Leith ar shé cinn den Bharr-50 agus déanfar cur síos ar an Bharr-50 iomlán in iris speisialta a fhoilseofar leis an ócáid a chomóradh.

Agus é ag labhairt thar ceann Fhoras na Gaeilge, dúirt Gearóid Trimble: “Deis iontach atá i nGradaim an Bharr-50 leis an aitheantas cuí a thabhairt do chomhlachtaí uaillmhianacha a bhfuil ag éirí leo sa saol tráchtála agus an Ghaeilge á húsáid acu mar uirlis mhargaíochta, uirlis chumarsáide agus uirlis ghnó.”

2007 Top 50 Business as Gaeilge Awards recognise business entrepreneurs from home and abroad for contributions to the Irish Language

Czechs, Americans, Famous Irish Pottery Artists – an eclectic mix make this year’s Barr 50!

Dublin, Friday 1 June 2007; Lá Nua, today announced the recipients of the Top 50 Business as Gaeilge Awards sponsored by PricewaterhouseCoopers and Foras na Gaeilge at a reception attended by the Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs Éamon Ó Cuív, at the Four Seasons, Dublin.

2007 marks the second year of the awards with a new group of fifty recipients highlighting the active use of the Irish language across a wide range of professions and industries including professional services, technology, the arts, media and entertainment, retail, catering and the public sector. Recipients this year are based at home and abroad and are represented by a number of different nationalities including Irish, Czech and American   – a list of all recipients is detailed below.

The Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs Éamon Ó Cuív said “The promotion of Irish in industry and the professions is vital to its future, as it gives status to the language outside of the educational sector. I applaud PricewaterhouseCoopers and Foras na Gaeilge for their sponsorship of this event.”

 

Special Achievement Awards were presented to six leading business names and companies at the event 

 

C&C was recognized in the category for ‘Use of Irish as a marketing tool in the Private Sector’ due primarily to its innovative advertising campaigns such as ‘Scaoil an Fuinneamh’ for Energise Sport which won the Foras na Gaeilge Ad of the Decade, last year, as part of TG4’s Ten Year Anniversary.  

Iarnód Eireann was recognized in the category for ‘Use of Irish as a marketing tool in the Public Sector’, a longstanding contributor to the promotion of Irish offering a fully bilingual service for passengers. This award paid particular attention to the bilingual signage used at the recent opening of the Docklands Railway station in Dublin, the introduction of a fully bilingual menu service to passengers on the upgraded intercity service between Dublin and Cork and the employment of a dedicated Irish Language Officer.

The up and coming search engine web-site Gasta, who recently secured a deal with the fifty percent Google owned Ask.com received the special award for ‘Innovation Through the Use of Irish’. Gasta offers web-users looking for anything relating to the Irish language or a myriad of other languages the perfect window. 

The world renowned Irish artist Louis Mulcahy, whose pottery is exported globally, received the best ‘Gaeltacht Company’ Award. However his promotion of the Irish language extends beyond the Gaeltacht to stores nationwide, the internet and all of the countries to which he exports his highly visible Irish language packaged pottery.

Europus who has been working bilingually with TG4 to provide some of our favourite programmes with English subtitles received the award for ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’. With Áine Ní Chonghaile at the helm, the company has developed a wide range of translation and language consultancy services for clients in both the public and private sectors. All of the fifteen strong Europus team qualified as fully accredited translators in the inaugural Foras na Gaeilge Translator Accredited exams earlier this year.

Fiontraithe le Gaeilge (Entrepreneurs with Irish), comprising a group of Irish speaking entrepreneurs who have come together to improve their senior business skills, won the ‘Inspiring Entrepreneurship’ award. 

 

The fifty long list also recognizes Michal Boleslav, a computer graduate from the Czech Republic who since arriving in Dublin, in the 19990s, has embraced the language and has played an integral part, as technical advisor, on the construction of www.beo.ie the monthly Irish language Internet magazine. More recently he has worked as Technical Director on focal.ie, the national terminology database for Irish and is currently involved on a place-name project with Fiontar.

In addition to this Barr Chaoga 2007 marks the achievements of Dr Máire Nic Ghiolla Uain – the winner of the prestigious British Female Inventor of the Year Award earlier in May for developing an encryption product aimed at protecting the public from cyber crime. Dr Máire Nic Ghiolla Uain, from Éadan na Fhionnfrach near the Glenties, who endeavours to incorporate the Irish language in her business communications, also received, earlier this year, the Annual Award from the Women’s Engineering Society.

The awards were initiated by daily newspaper Lá Nua to encourage entrepreneurship among Irish speakers, explaining the origins of the awards Connla Lawlor, Lá Nua chief executive said “More than anyone else, these entrepreneurs and wealth creators are building a firm foundation for the future of the Irish language.”

Ann O’Connell, partner, PricewaterhouseCoopers said  “With Irish now recognised as an official working language of the EU, what better place to make it active and alive than in daily commerce. We hope that these awards, and our involvement, will assist  in encouraging increased use of our language in the future.”

Foras na Gaeilge, returning as partner for the second year running explained: “Today’s awards highlight the diverse range of ambitious businesses and business people utilising the Irish language through their communications and practices on a regular basis. The interest in the language from other countries and nationalities is testiment to its universal appeal.
